The theme was announced on Friday: “Build something you would use everyday.” With the challenge at hand, our Pursuit 6.4 Fellows spent the weekend putting their coding skills in action to design a series of web apps as part of our annual Hackathon.

Held at the close of the technical curriculum, Hackathon is an important milestone for Pursuit Fellows. Equipped with new coding skills, Fellows work to transform an idea into a product. The 48-hour ideation, design, and build sprint is designed to take their skills and teamwork to the next level.

Congrats to the teams who earned awards for their projects in three categories, you can find their projects below!

Hackathon wouldn’t be possible without our volunteers who are integral to every stage of the Pursuit Fellowship. Codecademy, an online learning platform that teaches coding skills, sponsored the Hackathon, contributing prize money, Pro memberships, and most importantly, their volunteers. Staff from the organization’s engineering, product, curriculum, and business development teams (along with Pursuit Fellow and One Drop Software Engineer Carlos Martinez) provided guidance to Pursuit Fellows throughout the weekend as volunteer technical mentors and judges. Volunteers from Dataminr and mParticle provided mentorship on the design aspects of their projects. Thank you to Codecademy and all our volunteers!

“The Pursuit Hackathon presentations are a reminder of the amazing, intelligent work that can be done when you combine dedication and drive with access to tools and knowledge. You can clearly see the impact of the Pursuit program just by looking at what their Fellows can accomplish in 2-3 days time. I highly recommend others to volunteer with Pursuit”
- Arpan Somani, strategic Partnerships Manager at Codeacademy

While Hackathon is an important milestone, there’s so much more ahead. Next, our Fellows will launch into their capstone projects while continuing to grow their skills. Beyond that lies the goal of securing their first jobs in tech. We’re excited by the journey to come, and we’ll be there to support our Fellows every step of the way.
